Enjoy the Moonlight Classic Jazz Band, face painting, Amici's Pizza and delicious Tin Pot ice cream. Mateo, the San Mateo Library Explorer Van, and the San Mateo Police Activities League team will be there to tell you about all their great resources and answer all your questions. There also will be a City table to explain all about San Mateo's transition to district elections and how you can make your opinion on district elections heard. The Baywood Owners Improvement Association Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 2021 Baywood Outstanding Home Maintenance Award is given to Irma Velasquez and Sherman Chan on Franklin Street! Irma and Sherman are long-time Baywood residents and put in one of the first xeriscapes in Baywood over 10 years ago. It has grown in beautifully and is a pleasure for the many walkers, cyclists and drivers who pass it daily. Their home reflects the merging of traditional quality Baywood landscaping with a modern emphasis on beautiful and sustainable plantings. Irma, Sherman and their dog, Sesame, were presented with a "Best of Baywood" sign to put in their front yard, as well as a $100 gift certificate to the Golden Nursery in San Mateo. Irma and Sherman, along with winners of San Mateo United (SMUHA) Outstanding Home Maintenance Awards in other San Mateo neighborhoods, will be presented with an official commendation from the San Mateo City Council at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 7th at 7pm via Zoom (zoom link available here ). Please join us in congratulating Irma and Sherman for adding to Baywood's quality of life in such a lovely way. Our San Mateo Public Library would like to partner with Baywood this fall to host a STORYWALK (c) for families, children and all readers. STORYWALK (c) is a fun and simple program that has been run by libraries across the country. Residents along a street(s) in a neighborhood put up signs in their front yard with a page from a well-loved children's story. As you walk from house to house, you get to read the entire story. A map is provided so you know where all the STORYWALK(c) signs are. This is of particular fun to young children, but any booklover can join in and STORYWALK (c) is guaranteed to put a smile on your face! We've all done a lot more neighborhood walking during COVID...let's keep that habit going in a new and enjoyable way! We will need a minimum of 15 homes, and a maximum of 34 homes, to conduct a STORYWALK (c). All you have to do is put a sign in your front yard. The Library and BOIA take care of the rest. With this beautiful species at risk of extinction, our community and artists are working together to protect the monarch. Baywood's own John Sutti is a founder of the Zoetic Tapestry Project and an exhibiting artist in the show.

ALAMEDA-PARROTT TRAFFIC CALMING PROJECT UPDATE
While the Alameda-Parrott Traffic Calming Project has been slowed down by the pandemic, you may have noticed San Mateo Public Works trucks out at the intersection yesterday cutting down the delineators. Kellie Benz of the Dept. of Public Works provided the following update: "On Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, City crews will be working at the intersection of Parrott Drive and Alameda de las Pulgas to address community concerns about bus movements and improve delineator aesthetics. This work will occur as we continue to finalize the design for the Phase 1 intersection safety improvements. It is expected that the implementation of the Phase 1 effort will begin in 2022. We thank you for your continued patience and cooperation on these improvements. To learn more about the Phase 1 project, please visit: www.cityofsanmateo.org/BaywoodTraffic." We will stay in touch with Public Works about this priority Baywood traffic project. We thank City staff for moving this project forward as quickly as possible.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT! PARTICIPATE IN CITY DISTRICT ELECTIONS PUBLIC HEARINGS AND WORKSHOPS AND GET READY TO DRAW YOUR DISTRICT MAPS.
PLEASE COME TO THE BAYWOOD SOCIAL SUNDAY, SEPT. 19TH, 2PM-4PM OUTSIDE AT BAYWOOD ELEMENTARY TO TALK WITH A SAN MATEO CITY STAFF ABOUT THIS! We have written you about the upcoming transition in San Mateo from "at large" to "district" elections. Beginning with 2022 City Council elections, you no longer will be allowed to vote for 5 Council Members to represent all of San Mateo. Instead, you will only vote for 1 Council Member who represents your "district." There will be either 5, 7 or 9 districts in this new system designed to give greater representation to all San Mateans across our city. There also will be a decision at the September 13th, 6pm, Public Hearing #2 as to whether to continue with the current rotating mayor system or switch to an at-large mayor. This will effect how many districts are drawn and how our city is governed. We support continuing with the existing rotating mayor system to give each representative and district an equal chance to lead the City. It is CRITICAL that you participate in all/some of the upcoming Community Workshops and City Council Public Hearings to ensure that your voice is heard in how you want your district drawn. We believe that it is very important that existing neighborhoods like Baywood remain intact in these new districts as neighborhoods are very strong communities of interest. We need you to speak up at meetings, write emails and show that you want Baywood to remain intact in the new district maps. The City has a very short timeline to do this work due to legal requirements. The new district maps must be finalized by early November of THIS year. In mid-September, the City will release its DistrictR online tool which will allow you to draw the districts as you think make sense across San Mateo (a bit like you used to play with Etch-A-Sketch when you were a kid). That is something everyone should do. Check out details here. In the meantime, please plan to attend one/all of the various Public Hearings and Community Workshops to let City Council know your opinion on how the new districts should be drawn!
