BAYWOOD BULLETIN JULY 4TH 2021 EDITION

PARTICIPATE IN THE BAYWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD YARD SALE, SATURDAY, JULY 17TH!

We are so happy to announce the return of a neighborhood favorite: the annual Baywood Yard Sale on Saturday, July 17th, 9am-2pm! What better way to celebrate the start of summer and a return to "normal" than by giving your home a "late spring cleaning" and being a seller or buyer at the best yard sale around? We will update everyone if County health guidelines change, and we will strictly follow COVID-19 protocols. So start planning what you want to sell and what treasures you may be looking for! You've wanted to get rid of that set of chairs that don't fit in your family room, or you have slightly used toys that your kids don't play with any more. Make a list and plan to participate in the Baywood Annual Yard Sale. You can sell items from your front yard or go in with Baywood neighbors at one of their homes. This event always is a win-win. Baywood neighbors get to "spring clean" their homes while finding that "special something" that another neighbor is selling, and also helping our community. You can keep what you earn, or donate the proceeds to a charity of your choice, or to our program partners, the San Mateo Police Activities League and Samaritan House. Add your name to the list of families participating by sending an email to baywoodhomeowners@gmail.com . Please include your name, address, telephone number, email, the summary list of items you want to sell and what you want to do with your proceeds. Your Baywood Owners Improvement Association (BOIA) Board will create a map of all participating sellers in Baywood, promote it on social media and have it available on July 17th. We have created banners and will place them around Baywood to get people excited about our great Baywood Yard Sale. It's super easy and fun to participate. Just let us know you want to participate and check back at our website for details and "tips for success." We are happy to answer any questions. Please share this email with your friends and neighbors and encourage them to sign up as well. Many thanks, and we look forward to seeing you, your friends and Baywood neighbors on Saturday, July 17th for a fun, safe and successful Baywood Yard Sale to celebrate our wonderful neighborhood!

4TH OF JULY CENTRAL PARK MUSIC CONCERT

What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with a concert in Central Park and the return of the San Mateo Summer Music Series? Pack up a picnic lunch and head on over to Central Park next Sunday, July 4th!

The concert will start at 11:45 with our National Anthem and a salute to San Mateo's essential workers. Then, from noon to 2pm, Club 90 will put on a great choreographed dance party show, featuring hits from the 70's on up to today. Listen and dance to hits from Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Usher, Rihanna and more!

Since there will not be any fireworks this year, let's make our own fun in Central Park...see you there on July 4th at 11:45am!

SIGN UP TODAY TO BE PART OF A SAN MATEO PUBLIC LIBRARY STORYWALK (C)!

Our San Mateo Public Library would like to partner with Baywood this August to host a STORYWALK (c) for families, children and all readers. STORYWALK (c) is a fun and simple program that has been run by libraries across the country. Residents along a street(s) in a neighborhood put up signs in their front yard with a page from a well-loved children's story. As you walk from house to house, you get to read the entire story. A map is provided so you know where all the STORYWALK(c) signs are. This is of particular fun to young children, but any lover of books can join in and STORYWALK (c) is guaranteed to put a smile on your face! We've all done a lot more neighborhood walking during COVID...let's keep that habit going in a new and enjoyable way! We will need a minimum of 15 homes, and a maximum of 34 homes, to conduct a STORYWALK (c). All you have to do is put a sign in your front yard. The Library and BOIA take care of the rest. Please email us at baywoodhomeowners@gmail.com if you would like to take part in a Baywood STORYWALK (c) this August. This is another great way to bring our community together, so we really hope you will raise your hand for STORYWALK(c) today!

SAN MATEO CITY GOVERNMENT UPDATES

IMPORTANT! CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO MOVE FORWARD WITH TRANSITION TO ELECTIONS BY DISTRICT: SHORT TIMEFRAME FOR PUBLIC INPUT

The San Mateo City Council voted at its June 21st meeting to approve a "Resolution of Intent" to transition San Mateo city elections from their current "at-large" large election model to a district format. If enacted into law, this means that, beginning with the November 2022 elections, San Mateo registered voters would select one City Council Member for their "district" (boundaries to be determined) rather than Council Members who represent all of San Mateo, i.e. "at-large," as we do today. This decision was brought on by a May 24th complaint letter received from attorney Scott Rafferty recommending the switch due to a lack of minority candidates in elections, which could violate the California Voting Rights Act, or CVRA. Due to the strict CVRA timelines, the change could be enacted as soon as this September 7th, although there is an opportunity for a 90-day extension, which the City is seeking in order to be able to include the results from the 2020 Census in the drawing of new election districts. This would be one of the most important changes in San Mateo elections in decades and it is very important that San Mateo residents provide their input on communities and criteria considered while drawing district maps. Mark your calendars to attend the San Mateo City Council meetings on July 6 and July 19 meetings to provide your input. Draft district maps and proposed election sequencing would be discussed at City Council hearings on Aug. 2 and Aug. 16. The Council would adopt the preferred map in an ordinance by Sept. 7 unless the 90-extension was granted. For a summary of the issue and actions taken, please read the June 25th San Mateo Daily Journal article by Curtis Driscoll. To review the City Council discussion on this issue, please watch the City Council June 21 Regular Meeting, starting at 2:25:39.
